James Rosenquist: Two Paintings

Oct 17 – Nov 16, 2019
509 W 27th St, New York, NY 10001, United States

As James Rosenquist once told the art historian Robert Rosenblum, “The priority for me is visual invention and, really, content is secondary.” Two monumental works by the famously rebellious artist are good examples of that visual invention. A testament to Rosenquist’s love of flying, Joystick catches the perceptual warps and refractions of speed and sky, painted in a Pop Art idiom. The Geometry of Fire depicts an actual space—Rosenquist’s fire-ravaged Florida studio. In both, the artist touches Nirvana. —E.C.
