Founded in 1991 by the harpsichordist and conductor Christophe Rousset, the period band Les Talens Lyriques has staked out territory ranging from the early Baroque to the dawn of the Romantic period, which puts the symphonies of Franz Schubert just within reach. A skeptic might wonder what the French ensemble has to teach us about this repertoire that their colleagues at, say, the Vienna Philharmonic, back in the composer’s hometown, have failed to discover. But that’s the wrong question. Schubert’s symphonic treasure house will never be exhausted, and Rousset’s gang is full of vivid, inquiring minds. —Matthew Gurewitsch
