When Sigmund Freud began exploring the unconscious through psychoanalysis, he didn’t think he’d be influencing the course of art history. And yet Freud’s theories shaped the avant-garde movements of the 20th century. The Expressionists struggled to put the essence of their own “self” on canvas. The Surrealists delved into the wintry depths of consciousness. In the 1980s, pioneers of Conceptual Art focused on questions of existence. This exhibition in Tübingen features works by modernist and contemporary pioneers Paul Delvaux, Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dalí, and Heidi Bucher, tracing the impact of psychoanalysis on the language of art in last century. —Elena Clavarino
