Jean Dubuffet, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Nava—three generations whose works on paper are the subject of this show. Dubuffet is the springboard, his raw energy and expression an antidote to art of the academy. Curator Oliver Schultz compares Dubuffet’s output from the 1970s and early 80s—late work—to Basquiat’s from the same years, when he was roaring to fame in his 20s until a drug overdose, in 1988, killed him at 27. Schultz then illuminates the impact they both had on Robert Nava, born in 1985 in East Chicago, Indiana. In Berlin, the Pace Gallery celebrates its 65th anniversary by exploring this art brut echo chamber. —Henry McGrath
