The multimedia artist Ingrid Pollard was born in the 1950s, in Guyana, but she’s lived in the U.K. since she was four years old. Pollard began taking photographs as a teenager, when for a school project she went to the woods and the sewage works of East London to snap shots. In the 1980s, she began placing Black people in rural landscapes, challenging the British stereotype that sees them confined to cities and towns. The photos, often in a faded palette, radiate serenity, an equanimity between person and landscape. This survey of Pollard’s 40-year career includes photography, sculpture, film, and her small charming ceramic boats. —Elena Clavarino
