Historically, the Afrasian Sea Trade Route was also known as the Indian Ocean Route. Up until the 16th century, merchants departed from the eastern coast of Africa and sailed through the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, along the Bay of Bengal, and through the South China Sea to ports in China and Southeast Asia. They often carried materials as simple as indigo dye, but along with the dye they brought ideas, technologies, and culture to other populations. In this exhibition—with works by Kelani Abass, Shiraz Bayjoo, and Oscar Murillo on view—new commissions and existing projects come together to trace the Afroasiatic exchanges of centuries past. —Elena Clavarino
