The artist Max Ernst made collages when he returned home, traumatized, from W.W. I. A key figure in the Dada movement, and the founder of Dadaism in Cologne, Ernst then moved on to Surrealism, continuing his themes of war and torment. These images eventually caught the attention of the Nazis, putting Ernst in danger. However, they also captivated Peggy Guggenheim, an art collector who would become his third wife and who helped him escape to America. Ernst was certainly a multifaceted artist, but there is one thing he was not: a photographer. This new exhibition attempts to forge connections between the world of photography and Ernst’s surrealist universe. —Zack Hauptman
