Modernism has a hard time flourishing in the jaws of communism, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t found expression inside repressive regimes. “In the Eye of the Storm” celebrates the courageous artists who made advances in Futurism and Constructivism at the risk of not only their livelihoods but their lives. Focusing on the period between 1900 and the 1930s, the exhibition presents groundbreaking work from the artists Oleksandr Bohomazov, Vasyl Yermilov, Viktor Palmov, and Anatol Petrytskyi. In a comprehensive survey of Ukrainian modern art, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza makes sure to include background on the exceptional circumstances in which these exceptional works were created. —Clara Molot
