“Legend has it that Alberto Giacometti, haunted by dissatisfaction, destroyed his works as he was making them,” writes Michèle Kieffer, curator of the exhibition “In Search of Lost Works.” But is this legend true? Or was it a myth created by Giacometti? “A careful examination of the archives,” Kieffer continues, “shows however that he didn’t systematically destroy his works.” Using sketches, notebooks, and archival photographs as touchstones, the exhibition seeks to explain which pieces were lost (far fewer than previously thought) and why. Decisive works have been reconstructed. —E.C.
