Over the past 20 years, the founders of Lumière des Roses Gallery, Marion and Philippe Jacquier, have collected nearly 10,000 photographs spanning a century. For the exhibition “In Praise of Anonymous Photography,” the duo has curated a study in the mystery and wonder that unsigned or amateur images can create. The photos vary in subject. In the 1950s, a pharmacist took pictures of his clients without their knowledge. From 1954 to 1975, a person named Lucette took blurry photographs of her journey around the world. In the 1930s, young Jean captured his brief love affair with a gal named Rose. The photographs have no thematic connection. They simply document the way ordinary people found meaning in daily life. —Alice Browne
