W. E. B. Du Bois is arguably the most influential Black intellectual in history. Born in 1868 in Massachusetts, his vision as the co-founder of the NAACP made him him a key leader of the Black liberation movement. Du Bois was a staunch advocate for full civil rights, which he believed to be achieved through a group of Black intellectual elites known as the “talented tenth.” A new exhibition at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery explores the impact of his writing, highlighting his relevance in contemporary art and thought. Eleven works by artists such as Derrick Adams, Jenny Holzer, and Julie Mehretu, pay tribute to the great man and reflect on his enduring role in American culture. —Maggie Turner
