The Met Costume Institute exhibition of 2021 took inspiration from an antique patchwork quilt. Within the gallery space, 100 cubicles—or “patches”—each contained a garment that expressed an idea or a quality in American design. It all added up to a unique and distinctly New World fashion vocabulary. That was Part One. Part Two of “In America” is more of a narrative. Its focus is men and women’s dress in the domestic space, and how what Americans wear has evolved over two centuries. These stories will be found in the museum’s American Wing period rooms, where vignettes have been placed among the furniture and objects. —Elena Clavarino
