An empty opera house, its chandelier hanging solemnly, its boxes lifeless, evokes interesting emotions. Perhaps it’s something about the size, or the absence, a sense of something lingering, a melancholy quiet. Photographer Candida Höfer specializes in capturing the ghost in the room. At Berlin’s Museum of Photography, 90 of her works—images of libraries, museums, restaurants, theaters, and other public spaces—fill the gallery. Displayed thematically, the photographs date from the 1980s through recent years. —Elena Clavarino
