Before a silkscreen by Andy Warhol was the measure of celebrity, there was the portrait by Richard Avedon. He once described his famous subjects as “symbolic of themselves,” a title one might apply to his portraiture, seeing how recognizable and fame-filled his black-and-white images became. Commencing his career on staff at Harper’s Bazaar in the mid–1940s, Avedon captured everyone from Marilyn Monroe and the Beatles to Jackie Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. To celebrate his centennial, Gagosian’s rue de Ponthieu gallery now presents a curated collection of his star-studded photography. —Lucy Horowitz
