Huang Rui: Ways of Abstraction

Sept 25 – Dec 19, 2021
4 Jiuxianqiao Rd, Chaoyang, Beijing, China

Working with paint and the printed word, and in collage, photography, and performance, Huang Rui, born in 1952, is one of China’s pioneering artists. During the years of Mao he was a radical rebel. In 1979, after Mao’s death, he was a founding member of the The Stars Art Group, which brought together Beijing’s self-taught avant-garde artists. They and their work protested censorship. In 1984, Huang left China for Japan, but he returned to Beijing in 2001. This exhibition presents 40 paintings and sculptural installations that span Huang’s whole career. His 2021 series “Heaven, Earth, Man” is exhibited for the first time. —E.C.
