While Huang Po-Chih grew up in Taiwan in the 1980s his mother worked in the booming textile industry. As boom’s do, it ended, and textile production was gradually outsourced to cheaper workers around the world. In his essay “Blue Skin: Mama’s Story,” Po-Chih interviewed his mother about her relationship with textiles—her jobs at factories and in alteration shops. At MUMOK, the artist examines the grueling life of Taiwanese workers. Quotes from the essay, both in the original Mandarin and in translated English, are printed on fabric, and dozens of denim jackets tailored to Po-Chih’s mother, as well as portraits of her, fill the space. The show also includes a video that blends real and fictional accounts of people striving for the “Hong Kong Dream” only to be crushed spiritually and financially by globalization. —J.D.
