Since 2001, everyday for 12 years, the Beijing-based artist Hong Hao has taken photographs and scans of the objects around him, intent on removing an empirical valuation and letting them be just things. He noticed that a scan flattens objects and also reverses them, much like Chinese rubbing techniques executed on bronze and stone. In this exhibition, prints, photographs, and works on canvas reflect on the boundaries between object and machine, spatial and aesthetic relationships, as well as traditional values versus the modern world. —E.C.
