Like other museums around the world, the British Museum has been embroiled in controversy over the origins of many objects that it holds. A new exhibition addresses the issue head-on. The Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke will evaluate some of the museum’s most iconic pieces through the lens of British imperialism. Focusing on areas such as Africa, India, and the Caribbean, Locke provides a personal exploration of these artifacts and the circumstances surrounding their arrival at the British Museum. It’s a dialogue about priceless artifacts, a country’s history, and who owns the fruit of that history. —Alice Browne
