It’s hard to look past the Moulin Rouge-ness of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, court painter of the “culture of Montmartre,” the hub of Dionysian and decadent night life in late-19th-century Paris. But this exhibition takes on the challenge, emphasizing instead the more subtle yet equally pervasive themes in Toulouse-Lautrec’s work. Specifically: the narrative thread that is often present in his imagery, and his desire to paint time as a moving thing. —J.V.
