Helena Rubinstein, nicknamed the “empress of beauty” by Jean Cocteau, was a visionary businesswoman who built a cosmetics empire from scratch, beginning with a skin cream. She was also a voracious collector of art and artifacts, though it is less known that her collecting included over 400 pieces of non-European work, and that she was an expert on African and Oceanian art. This exhibition focuses primarily on Rubinstein’s African art, with 60 expressive and powerful pieces on view. —E.C.
