“My practice has long focused on women,” says the Ethiopian painter Hana Yilma Godine. “I work symbolically to communicate the complexity of their lives and see them as a source of life within my paintings.” Godine’s latest exhibition, “A Hair Salon in Addis Ababa,” showcases female subjects from her hometown in both domestic and public spaces. The show also pays homage to Ethiopian iconography: Godine uses a flattened perspective, and paints elongated, elegant figures. The exhibition spans two New York galleries: the Fridman Gallery and Rachel Uffner. —Sophie Kemp
