“It is really the essence of my work,” says Ha Chong-Hyun, “the conjunction between the materials—oil paint and hemp cloth—and my spirit and performance.” Ha was the creator of the back-pressure method, known as bae-ap-bub, which involves pushing oil paint through the pores of canvas or hemp, then on the opposite side manipulating the paint with brush, palette knife, and even fire. The Cardi Gallery presents new works from Ha’s Conjunction series. The neutrals for which he is known are here. And also paintings in blue, black, and brilliant vermillion. —E.C.
