Vladimir Sorokin’s brilliant satire of Soviet socialist-realist art, Their Four Hearts (1994), introduces four characters who are archetypes of the good Soviet citizen—then subverts these archetypes and the system that created them. Max Lawton’s 2022 translation of Sorokin’s book comes with illustrations by the American artist Gregory Klassen. Eyes Never Sleep presents a suite of these charcoal and pastel drawings, a visual counterpart to Sorokin’s nightmarish text and an evocation of the existential madhouse that is the Soviet Union. —Laura Jacobs
