Georgia Russell is an artist with a scalpel. Through virtuoso slitting she has transmuted found objects—books, for instance—into sculpture, unexpectedly dimensional and alive. Or she lays one painted linen canvas over another, the canvas on top slit into fine strips so that the two layers interact spatially to extraordinary effect. In these new paintings Russell has further pushed her practice, creating a painted game of perception on a single canvas, sans scalpel. —L.J.
