The French painter Georges de La Tour is known for his handling of light. He used dramatic nocturnal effects to portray ordinary people as mystical, quasi-religious figures. Similarly, he rendered saints and angels without halos, using his painting technique to portray them in solemn reverence. Though only a small body of his work survives, the Palazzo Reale has partnered with 28 lenders from three continents to organize the first-ever exhibition on Georges de La Tour in Italy. —E.C.
