He was born Jerzy Himmelfarb in Poland, in 1900, but became George Him in 1933, when he and Jan Le Witt started a design partnership called Lewitt-Him. Providently, the partners, both Jews, left Poland for England in 1937, where they won commercial contracts and commissions. In 1954, Le Witt split off to devote himself to painting, and Him consolidated a style of illustration that captured the tone of the time, a sort of storybook surrealism with plenty of wit. This is the first-ever retrospective on the great George Him. —L.J.
