Artists Gareth Nyandoro and Mostaff Muchawaya live and work in Ruwa, a town in Zimbabwe’s Harare Province. In this dual exhibition, the two men seek to create a psychological portrait of the place they call home. Ruwa was one of many towns established during the mid–1980s, a moment of transition from rural to urban throughout Zimbabwe. Nyandoro and Muchawaya dive into the historical context of urbanization, focusing on the people who fuel the community while facing economic challenges. Nyandoro, working in ink on paper, depicts the process of urban-planning development, drawing houses, plots, and the people who will build them. Muchawaya paints portraits that use a layered process to mix observation and memory. Together, the two men tell a larger story about Ruwa. —Clara Molot
