The incomparable film star Greta Garbo had a little-known hobby—designing rugs. During her zenith, in the 1930s, Garbo was going from movie to movie, too busy to focus on interior design. “I worked,” she said. “When was I going to sit in the living room?” After she quit Hollywood in the early 1940s, however, she was finally able to spend time in her home, and her interest in interior design bloomed. Drawn to Scandinavian design, the Swedish actress created a series of colorful geometric carpets. As she was fond of saying, “color makes a room sing.” At Galerie56, curators Lee Mindel and Paul Jackson, a Scandinavian design historian, have selected 50 pieces of furniture inspired by Garbo’s movie and interiors—from Margareta Köhler’s retro sofa to aluminum lamps made in the 1930s. —Jensen Davis
