Frida Kahlo is best known for her turbulent, often fantastical, self-portraits. This five-work exhibition explores other sides of the Mexican pioneer, who died in 1954. Two still lifes see ripening fruit sensualized into images of seed and sex. A painted double portrait of Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, placed in a lyre-shaped frame, suggests a marriage of mutually inspiring muses. A sketch from a New York City window is as studiously literal as can be, while a painting of seedpods with a weeping fetus and red moon is both mystical and malevolent. All five works come from a private collection and have rarely been exhibited before. —E.C.
