“The house is not experienced from day to day only … Through dreams, the various dwelling-places in our lives co-penetrate and retain the treasures of former days.” These lines are from the first chapter of The Poetics of Space, written in 1958 by the philosopher Gaston Bachelard. It’s subject? Bachelard brings phenomenology and psychoanalysis to his study of architecture. Sixty-two years later, taking inspiration from Bachelard’s book, the Dallas Museum of Art has mounted a 50-work exhibition that see artists such as Alex Da Corte, Olivia Erlanger, EJ Hill, Francisco Moreno, Pipilotti Rist, and Do Ho Suh reflecting on Bachelard’s ideas. —E.C.
