There’s no question that in the last 50 years the most exciting avant-garde fashion design has come from Japan. Experimental, intellectual, conceptual, poetic, Japanese designers such as Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto shook up the West with their depth and invention. Seeking to correct and refine our view of modern Japanese fashion, this exhibition looks at its roots in the Meiji Era (1868–1912) and its trajectory after the Second World War. A big show. —L.J.
