Picasso and Giacometti met in Paris in 1931. Giacometti was 30 and Picasso, a world renowned artist, was 50. Giacometti had been in Paris for nine years by then, and he’d watched the great Picasso from afar, enthralled by his dynamic use of form and color. The following year, in 1932, Picasso attended Giacometti’s inaugural solo show in Paris. The two became close friends, visiting each other’s studios, working together, and sharing secrets. They remained close until the early 50s, when they abruptly fell out. But did their influence on each other end? In this exhibition, curator Dr. Dieter Buchhart looks to the work the artists made after their friendship ceased, and locates emerging affinities between the two. —Elena Clavarino
