Cartier has been a perennial symbol of luxury and grandeur since its inception in 1847. In 1984, the brand created the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, which offered the general public a hub for contemporary artistic innovation and experimentation. The Fondation came to be known as “a Belvedere for the arts,” with a collection of over 4,500 works. Fondation Cartier has now moved into a venue opposite the Louvre, its space designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, and there its Exposition Générale explores the institution’s artistic commitments through themed exhibitions—from an architectural laboratory, to an exhibit concerning conservation, to a gallery exploring how artistic achievement interacts with technology, expression, and fiction. —Maggie Turner
