The Lebanese-American poet and artist Edel Adnan was born in Beirut in 1925, in a bleak postwar period. She became a scholar with advanced degrees in philosophy, and was a professor in the philosophy of art. She also painted, relishing the “immediate beauty of color.” Known for landscape paintings of unembellished rapture, Adnan used palette knives to execute vibrant shapes that float buoyantly, abstractions of sun, sky, water, mountain, and plain. Adnan died in 2021, at age 96. This is her first show in New York since 2021, when she had a major Guggenheim retrospective. —Elena Clavarino
