Ellsworth Kelly is known for his colorful minimalist paintings and sculptures. Less recognizable, however, are the drawings he quietly crafted throughout his 70-year career. Now on view at the Art Institute of Chicago, over 100 drawings—intimate self-portraits; depictions of friends and fellow artists such as Robert Indiana and Delphine Seyrig—comprise an understudied facet of Kelly’s prolific career. They also reveal the influence of contemporaries such as Picasso, Matisse, and Max Beckmann. —Lucy Horowitz
