The promotional copy for this revival of a landmark of the 20th century is and isn’t on the money. “When they premiered Einstein on the Beach in Avignon in 1976,” it reads, “Philip Glass, Bob Wilson and Lucinda Childs made a monumental splash in the operatic pond, introducing a work nothing short of revolutionary, yet also returning to the genre’s roots in mythology.” “Monumental splash,” “revolutionary”—check. “Returning to the genre’s roots in mythology”—hunh? What might be most striking in 2023 is the elimination of Wilson’s original stage imagery, along with the original dances. Back in the day, it was Wilson who was fêted as the supreme visionary. Today, what seems to be keeping the flame burning is the music—as has been the operatic norm for centuries. —Matthew Gurewitsch
