“For as long as I can remember,” said the artist Edvard Munch, “I have suffered from a deep feeling of anxiety which I have tried to express in my art.” Under the guidance of the philosopher and anarchist Hans Jæger, Munch expressed this inner restlessness through his “soul paintings.” His use of pigment, his experimental techniques—these influenced the medium. In this exhibition, Munch’s work is placed in conversation with that of seven modern masters: George Baselitz, Miriam Cahn, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Tracy Emin, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol. Munch touched them all. —Elena Clavarino
