In 1956, Ed Ruscha drove along Interstate Highway 66 from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, where he would study commercial art. Over the years, he painted highways, gas stations, and other fixtures of American culture, making them his own. This landmark exhibition at MoMA examines Ruscha’s 60-year career and features his most famous works—for instance, Standard Station, Ten-Cent Western Being Torn in Half (1964)—as well as lesser-known objects he created along the way. The show of over 200 works contains paintings, drawings, prints, photography, and installations. And don’t miss the “Chocolate Room,” his first and only installation, which has never been on view in New York before. —Elena Clavarino
