Who didn’t love to play dress up as a child? Putting outfits together is essential to both forging and expressing one’s personal identity. The newest exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, explores the power of dress through over 100 pieces of women’s clothing and jewelry by 20th- and 21st-century designers—among them, Hattie Carnegie, Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, Elsa Peretti, and Alexander McQueen. Almost everything is drawn from the museum’s personal collection, including historical treasures never before displayed, such as items from Donna Summer’s personal collection. A highlight, on loan, is an ensemble owned by the inimitable Iris Apfel, who died in March of this year, at 102. —Lucy Horowitz
