Any film led by Al Pacino and John Cazale is already ahead of the game. And yes, there are only three. But where would we be without The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974)? The third movie, Dog Day Afternoon, came out in 1975, just three years before Cazale’s devastating death from lung cancer. Directed by Sidney Lumet, it’s the story of a rookie criminal (Pacino), his sidekick (Cazale), and a bank robbery gone terribly wrong. It’s now being adapted into a play starring The Bear’s Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who channel that chaotic sweltering summer of 1972. Rupert Goold directs. —Jeanne Malle
