“An artist is above all a human being, profoundly human to the core,” said Diego Rivera. “If the artist can’t feel everything that humanity feels … if he won’t put down his magic brush and head the fight against the oppressor, then he isn’t a great artist.” This statement typifies the zeal and gumption with which Rivera painted for 50 years. “Diego Rivera’s America” concentrates on his works from the 1920s through the early 40s. The art generated during this period exemplifies Rivera’s “humanity,” his involvement with and concern for American and Mexican politics. The show’s 160 objects build a multifaceted portrait of Rivera—fighter, revolutionary, husband (twice) of Frida Kahlo, and, above all, a painter who changed the face of North American art. —Thalia Bonas
