Didier William was born in 1983, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His family soon moved to Miami, in search of a different life, and he was raised on the city’s north side. As William grew up, he became preoccupied with immigration, Afro-Caribbean history, and otherness. William creates powerful paintings that often feature mottled human figures, their skin a pattern of tight-knit eyes—voudou symbolism from the Caribbean. This exhibition of 40 works spans multiple mediums and travels back to the neighborhood where William was brought up. Highlights include his first sculpture, 12 feet high, of a wooden body that invokes ancient Haitian worship rituals. —Elena Clavarino
