Leonor Fini (1907–1996) and Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) were born worlds apart—in steamy Buenos Aires, Argentina, and rural Clayton Green, England. But in the 1930s, they both found themselves in Paris, among the Surrealists. Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, and André Breton were holding court at Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, drinking wine and discussing the intricacies of consciousness. Fini worked with Elsa Schiaparelli and designed the bottle for the perfume “Shocking.” She painted portraits of erotic women, surrounded by sphinxes, werewolves, and witches. Carrington dated Max Ernst and painted portraits of him. She also painted self-portraits—in one she’s perched on a chair, hair wild, with a prancing hyena and a rocking horse flying in her wake. In Orange County, these remarkable women are again brought together. —Elena Clavarino
