Some wild costumes have come out of the New York City Ballet’s Fall Fashion Galas. On view for a month are costumes from 26 eminent fashion designers, created over the last seven years for new ballets at NYCB. Dance costumes have to allow unhindered movement, should flatter the dancers, and must not overwhelm the choreographer’s vision. If you want to see what not to do take a look online at Kurt Seligmann’s original costumes for George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments—they had the dancers in tears and were eventually replaced with black leotards and pale pink tights. —L.J.
