“There are no moral phenomena at all, but only a moral interpretation of phenomena,” wrote Friedrich Nietzsche in his 1886 book, Beyond Good and Evil. Inspired by Nietzsche, Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico applied a similar approach to his painting. In his hands, empty arcades, towers, and elongated shadows, placed in stark flat landscapes oddly lit, take on a metaphysical power that begs for interpretation. A new exhibition on this 20th-century artist explores his revolutionary approach, with works on loan from museums around the world. —J.V.
