David Hockney in China is guaranteed to be a big splash. Last year, for those who don’t know, a painting by Hockney was the most expensive piece by a living artist to sell at auction. This year, his inaugural retrospective at M Woods (in Hutong) features almost 100 works from the Tate Collection, dating from the 1950s to today. The exhibition includes the renowned A Bigger Splash (1967), Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy (1970-71), and My Parents (1977), and contains a fascinating twist: It examines the ways in which Hockney was influenced by Chinese art and culture. —E.C.
