In 2019, the year before the coronavirus broke out, David Hockney moved to Normandy. Since then, he’s chronicled the seasons on his iPad, capturing budding daffodils and sunflowers in sweeping strokes of color. He also paints nocturnal scenes on canvas, the iridescent shades of blue and black illuminated by golden reflections of the moon. Normandy has long inspired artists. A century ago, Monet and Renoir were also beguiled by its fertile hills. As part of the region’s Impressionist festival this summer, the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Rouen is showing Hockney’s recent works with those of his predecessors. —Elena Clavarino
