Saul Steinberg was not just a cartoonist. David Byrne was not just a singer. Each examined the idiosyncrasies and absurdities of modern life. Steinberg, known as the “artist-philosopher” of the 1940s and 50s, approached and observed society in illustrations that balance wit and care. He was a frequent contributor to The New Yorker. Byrne, the flamboyant frontman of the offbeat band Talking Heads took inspiration from Steinberg at a young age, calling his work “profoundly clever, humorous and inventive.” A new exhibition features Byrne’s drawings from 2006 on, set alongside Steinberg’s from 1949 to 1996. Their shared themes transcend pen on paper. —Maggie Turner
