DANCELIVE by Herman Cornejo

Streaming on Sebring Revolution

Herman Cornejo has been a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre since 2003. Although he is not one of the taller dancers in the company he can leap tall buildings in a single bound. In short, he jumps higher than anyone else. Add to that his gravity and charm, and you have a star. Spurred on by the pandemic and its isolation, Cornejo, in collaboration with the “photo-scientist” Steven Sebring, is experimenting with ways to make dance on film less flat and more phenomenal. Using time-lapse, multiple planes, juxtaposition, and more, Sebring and Cornejo create a pas de deux between cinematography and dimensionality. Cornejo and ABT principal Skylar Brandt dance a duet choreographed by Joshua Beamish, and to George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue Cornejo has made his own solo. The show also lets viewers in on rehearsals, to see how the filmic marvels are achieved. —L.J.
