For Dana Lixenberg, the goal of a photograph is to capture something brutally honest, something introspective. Lixenberg grew up in the Dutch capital, but in 1989, at just 25, she moved to New York. Soon she was working for major American magazines—Newsweek, Vibe, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and Rolling Stone. Preparation for these portraits involved Polaroid shots, and when Lixenberg returned to Amsterdam in 2018, she took another look at all those Polaroids, which included people like Prince, Whitney Houston, and a young Donald Trump. Lixenberg’s Polaroids from 1993 to 2010 are the subject of this exhibition; taken together they reflect on American culture as the century turned. —Elena Clavarino
